Types of Interfaces
There are two types you need to be aware of, GUI and CLI.
The GUI or Graphical User Interface enables you to click on icons, copy and paste short cuts, it is basically the the home screen on your computer.
Examples of GUI operating systems are Windows XP, Apple OSX and Vista.

GUI - Graphical User Interface
Uses Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointers to organise information and allow user interactions.
A window is an area on the screen that displays information for a specific program - helps to multi task.
An icon represents a folder or program.
A menu is used to help the user choose options.
A pointer helps navigate around the screen/ to click to open files/ software.
Command line Interface
dir - short for directory is a command for directory listing and files.
md - stands for made directory it is a command which will list all the directories.
cd c:\ - this is were you type the commands.
rd - is a command like del/copy/paste.
Advantages
- Needs much less memory in order to use it
- Cheaper monitor can be used
- Faster than any type of interface
- Does not need windows to run.
Disadvantages
- Commands must be typed in accurately otherwise it won't work
- Theres a larger number of commands to be learnt
- Cant just guess the instructions
- Can be confusing if you are not used to it.
It can be used for computer programs, design software such as auto cad, rhino and revit.
- Command Line Interface - allows the user to interact with the devise by type written instructions/ commands - the syntax has to be precise.
- With a CLI it is more important that the user understands how a computer works.
- Can write lists of commands called "scripts" to automate repetitive tasks.
